  1. How do I apply for a permit?

To apply for a permit, the following parameters are to be satisfied,

  • Your age must be below 18 and above 15 1/2 years
  • Do visit a DMV office (make an appointment for faster service)
  • Fill in the application form DL 44 (An original DL 44 form must be submitted. Copies obtained by Xeroxing, faxing, or other methods will not be accepted.)
  • Get the signatures of your parents' or guardians' on the application form DL 44
  • Provide your thumb print
  • Provide your photograph
  • Provide your social security number for verification with the Social Security Administration.
  • Confirm your birth date and legal presence
  • Provide your true and full name
  • Submit the right forms for driver education and/or driver training
  • Pay the application fee - $25
  • Do pass a vision exam
  • Pass a test on traffic laws and signs. The test comprises 46 questions and you need to clear at least 39 to get a passing grade. 3 chances are given to pass the test. If you fail, you must wait 7 days to retake it.
  1. How do I apply for a driver license?

To apply for a driver's license,

  • You must have applied for a learner's permit and have with held the permit for a 6 months time.
  • You should have driven the required 50 hours (10 at night)
  • You should have passed the road test.
  1. Where do I go to get a permit/license?

You can approach a California DMV office, specific to your area for your permit / license.

  1. How much will my driver license cost?

This costs $25 and the fee entitles you for three exams of any type within a year's time and this includes both the instruction permit and the driver license. If all the requirements are not met within the 12-month period, the application gets void and all steps must be re- completed.

  1. How can I replace a lost or stolen permit/license, and how much will it cost?

You need to pay a fee of $20 to a DMV office in order to replace a lost or stolen permit/license.

  1. Is it possible to lose your license? How?

Yes. If you have been cited of a DUI infraction, and/or have a major accident/traffic violation, your license may be revoked or taken way.

  1. Can a learner's permit be renewed?

If your application expires before you have held your provisional instruction permit for six months, you must return to DMV and re start the process with a new application. You are required to pay the application fee and fulfill all requirements. Take your instruction permit with you to DMV to gain a credit, for the time you have held your instruction permit and receive cumulative credit towards your subsequent provisional instruction permit to meet the six-month requirement before taking your driving test.

  1. Do I have to hold my learners permit for a time before getting my license?

You must have held it for a minimum of 6 months time to be eligible for a license.

  1. Do I have to make an appointment to take the written exam?

An appointment is only recommended for faster service and not required for a written exam.

  1. Do I get my license immediately after passing the road test?

Your license will be mailed to you with in 60 days of time after examination.

  1. Do I need my parent/guardians consent to get a permit and/or license?

You need to seek your parents' or guardians' signatures on the application form DL 44 if you are below 18.

  1. Does my parent/guardian have control over my driving status until I am 18?

As your parent/guardian gives the consent for financial responsibility, he/she has a right to have your license taken away.

  1. What are the minimum software requirements for your courses?

The course works with any standard browser like IE 5 or Netscape. There is no requirement of any software installation.
